'Adolescence' - long takes and brilliant acting


 Finished 'Adolescence' yesterday. Highly recommend to anyone who has 4 hours to spare. There's a lot of dialogue in this so if that's not your thing maybe this is not for you. However, the dialogue makes the drama quite engrossing and the acting is phenomenal. All the actors are killing it in this show: watch out for the 15 year old actor Owen Cooper in the third episode. He's probably going to get an Emmy nomination.

All episodes are shot as one long take. I thought there were invisible cuts in the middle just like 'Birdman or the unexpected virtue of ignorance' or '1917' but apparently they shot it literally for one hour with the camera moving the entire time.

 "Peacemaker" season 2 is the highly anticipated follow up to "Superman" and the third project of the DCU. I'm going to get into spoilers in this review so please keep that in mind.  To begin, I think what James Gunn did here with how he slightly changed season 1 in order to make it work in the DCU makes sense. Changing the Justice League in season 1 to be the Justice Gang instead. And then changing some other stuff so that season 2 makes sense was a good idea. This season is mostly about John Cena's character, not Peacemaker, but Christopher Smith discovering a door that takes him to a universe where his father and his brother are still alive. And they're nice to him! So he wants to stay there because he thinks it's the "best universe ever." Now, that plot alone is brilliant. "One battle after another" spoiler-free review

 The newest Paul Thomas Anderson movie. Everyone says it's a masterpiece but is it true? I wasn't originally going to write this review but I just had to since everyone was talking about it. "One battle after another" is pretty good. I think the best part of this movie is its craft. The camera work is done so confidently that shows that PTA is now a master of directing. There are multiple long scenes that just carry on with such energy. The camera does a lot. The fact that it was shot on VISTAVISION does help too. The cinematography in the desert definitely gives a lot of neo-western vibes similar to that of "No country for old men." Extremely well shot film. The film does feel like we are moving from following different characters. Maybe this is a bit too messy for me. The film has too many characters and can't juggle them that well. 4th annual Dumpling Awards (2024 movies)

(Still from 'The Brutalist') I used to do an annual awarding system every year for the best films I've seen that year. I used to do it as soon as the year ended around January or February. But I found that there were still many films that I couldn't see by that point. Therefore, recently I've changed to doing it during the summer. I have done this 3 years now and this is the 4th annual Dumpling awards that covers films of 2024 (all eligible films listed here ).
