'Mickey 17' short review

Bong Joon Ho has never made a bad film... until now. Very exciting film with extremely shallow understanding of its themes.

A satire is allowed to be over the top and clear about its message but that doesn't excuse it for being lazy.

Where is the intellect that "The host" had? Where is the emotion that "Okja" had? Where are the thrills that "Snowpiercer" had? "Okja" also lacked thematic depth but at least that film made up for it through the emotional core of the film. What makes "Mickey 17" so special? Nothing, unfortunately.

I waited over an year for this and it's really disappointing to see that my favorite director make a very mediocre film.

To get to the positives, Robert Pattinson is good, creative story (albeit it is based on a book), fun moments, VFX. Wow the VFX work is great.

The visuals are awesome but where is Bong's perfect directing that he reached with "Memories of murder?" I know I did a lot of comparing in this review so far but even as a stand alone film "Mickey 17" lacks so much.

Why does Mark Ruffalo's character Kenneth Marshall act like that? Why is he so evil? Actions and decisions that are completely random and wacky from multiple characters for the sake of being wacky. It's like as if Bong was given a bunch of money and he just wanted to try experimenting with stuff he would never be allowed to do. Well, after this film's (un)success, he may never be given a budget this size ever again by Hollywood.

Now I await for your animated film about sea creatures, Bong. Of course I still have faith in you.

Mickey 17: 2.5/5
